Organic apples and cinnamon. I cut 2 or 3 apples per batch. I use the mandoline to slice them. Mine only has one setting. I then place them on the dehydrator sheet, sprinkle with cinnamon and dehydrate over night on 155. Super simple and super yummy!

Today we are making organic banana chips and organic garlic potato chips! I'll let you know how they turn out.
At first, he asked me if I knew what they were and to be honest, I did not. I had never seen a raw peanut before! They have an earthy taste. I would not eat them in large quantities, but grabbing a small handful for a snack, just might do the trick.

Here are a few nutrition details on raw peanuts:
One cup of raw peanuts contains approximately 828 calories, 72 grams of fat, 37 grams of protein, 24 grams of carbohydrates, 12 grams of fiber and 10 grams of saturated fat. These numbers constitute 110 percent of the daily value of fat, 73 percent of protein, 50 percent of saturated fat, 19 percent of fiber and 8 percent of carbohydrates. Raw peanuts have a negligible amount of sodium and are cholesterol free. Raw peanuts' low carbohydrate-to-protein ratio makes them a good snack choice for people following low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets. (http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/health-benefits-raw-peanuts-4401.html)
Remember don't fall into fad or crash diets, remember eating healthy is a lifestyle. Make the change, you will not regret it. 2015 was a very busy year. I actually disconnected myself from blogging for a long time. I really needed to step back and make some changes. Detoxing is good to do...one can detox on many levels.

But, I am back and I am glad to be back! I am excited to hear all about what you are doing and making. I recently stumbled on a great raw cracker recipe. I have made it twice and am adding new things along the way and pairing it with new raw dips along the way. I actually found the recipe on pinterest (love pinterest) from The Nourished Caveman.

Raw Avocado and Golden Flax Crackers

1 cup of flax seed, soaked overnight in 2 cups of water

1 large avocado

1/2 onion - their recipe called for red, I used golden

1 small bunch of organic black kale

pinch of himilayan sea salt

I also added:

1 tbsp raw ground tiger nuts

pinch black pepper

1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

Blend all out all ingredients in blender, smooth thin layer over reflex sheets, dehydrate 4 hours at 130

then flip over and remove reflex and dehydrate for addition 4 hours.

Already! Chocolate Balls - Yummy and Easy! I have not posted for a while - a long while. I took a long break from the computer and joined a bible study and really wanted to put the majority my time, into the Word, my bible study, my husband and my family! It's good and healthy to take breaks from technology.

2014 - already! The year did not exactly start how I had planned, but I am still giving God thanks and praise. Looking forward to a year of good health!

Here is a quick and easy recipe. I did not do any measuring. Sometimes I open the pantry and just start tossing things into the food processor and for the most part they turn out very yummy!
I have a back log of photos and items to share with you. I try to take sometime away from the computer every now and then, as it can become very overly consuming.

To date in my get healthy journey I really want to stress, that during this transition/lifestyle change you need to get in tune with your body. You need to keep a log, a record of what you eat and when you feel uncomfortable, write it down. How you felt, what you ate, what was the consequences. You really have to make sure your body is getting everything it requires. I have seen people eat raw and then have low iron - people not getting enough protein. People who are tired, and dragging. You need to do your research and find that perfect balance that works for you. Which foods work for you. By all means stay away from ALL processed foods. Make sure you read labels, if you can make it fresh, although it might take more time, might not be as convenient, your body will thank you later! I for one have many nuts that I just can not digest, some being brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts. However, I can eat cashews and I love them! Every BODY is different. I have a hard time with vegetables that produce a lot of gas. Again you need to find that perfect balance, mixed with exercise and lots of fresh juice. I love my green juice. I drink 1L of green juice a day minimum!

I will post some green juice recipes in the next couple days!
Things are very busy as usual. I will update you on my gardening soon. We made wonderful cedar garden boxes in the back yard and we are growing, many different kinds of tomatoes, beans, lettuce, carrots, squash, cucumbers!!! It is all so exciting for the children to see how a tiny seed can grow such a wonderful plant that yields food. Our lettuce, swiss chard and spinach however is not growing well, we might need to try again...

We started everything in mini greenhouses and then took the plants outside! So exciting.

Love sprouts! Top any salad with these and you have a wonderful flavour. You can get many different varieties of sprouts. I am so thankful for the Greenbelt Greenhouse just outside of town!

Amazing greens, organic and locally grown.

I love my raw wraps. I was so excited to find out that Garden Basket - a grocery store in Markham near where I lived has started to carry the raw wraps I love. I have tried many times to make my own, but these ones hands down beat mine, so I am okay with buying them! I particularly like the Sundried Tomato Wrap from Live Food Bar.
Yummy! So, in looking for new breakfast ideas, a friend of mine Anna posted a post about raw banana crepes. I thought, awesome, easy - I can do that. I did and the kids really enjoyed them. We made banana cream to eat with them and raw strawberry jam!

Raw Banana Crepes
4 Bananas
2 Tbsp Ground Flaxseed

Raw Strawberry Jam

Wash strawberries
(depends how much you want to make)
Remove stems and cut 1/4 inch pieces
Place on dehydrator screen for 6-8 hours at 115'
Remove and pulse in food processor
Store in fridge.

Raw Banana Cream
Banana

Place in food processor or nutribullet, pulse out till a cream.

Place bananas and flaxseed in food processor until creamy. Pour out on to dehydrator teflex sheets and smooth with spatula until a circle 1/4 thick. Dehydrate 115' for until ready. I tend to put things on before bed and dehydrate overnight.

Another variation. Use your banana crepe and wrap a banana. Drizzle with local raw honey.
This was quick and satisfying!

A fun way to breakfast!

Have you made raw crepes - tell me about your experience.Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04420009152274531283noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8047164343939397382.post-81880823236458820042013-03-05T13:19:00.002-08:002013-03-05T13:19:55.930-08:00Cucumber, Zucchini, Red Pepper SaladRaw can be complicated or raw can be easy, but one thing for sure, RAW is yummy!
Here is a simple salad that I made at work in less than 10 minutes. Tastes great, makes a lot and there are only three ingredients and your favourite homemade dressing which you can make a head of time.

Cucumber, Zucchini, Red Pepper Salad
1 small zucchini
1/2 cucumber
1/2 red pepper

I sliced the red pepper with a knife. I used my mandolin on the cucumber and zucchini. It's that simple! Place all ingredients in a bowl and toss with your favourite homemade dressing.

I ate this with a few pieces of leftover pizza we had made last night. Pizza based make with organic quinoa, millet, amaranth, red lentil flour. Second layer a bean paste. Topped with red pepper, zucchini, and some Daiya cheese (Dairy free, soy free, casein free).

Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04420009152274531283noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8047164343939397382.post-81066829755242458122013-03-04T03:33:00.000-08:002013-03-04T03:33:14.195-08:00Make a Lifestyle Change - Part 2Equally as important as what we put in our bodies, is what we put on our bodies, and what we use in the environment around our bodies. Making a lifestyle change is not only about changing our eating habits, it is about changing ALL of our habits. It is about making healthier choices ALL around.

Think about all the potential chemicals/unhealthy ingredients that our bodies absorb/ingest on a daily basis, from the shampoo that we might use, to the toothpaste that we use, to the hand cream, soap, detergent, and cleaning products around the house. There are MANY brands that claim to be green, organic and natural that are not. I do not know how many times, I am told this. My response: it is your job to do your homework and to be an educated consumer, are you forgetting many companies do not care about your health and welfare they care solely about getting your dollar...

I stumbled on the movie some time ago called Chemical Nation, if you have a chance, watched it. Do your homework, read books and watch movies about the environmental impact and health impact of the many chemicals that we use that we may be unaware of.

Did you know that pine sol cleaner is not the smell of clean? News flash - clean does not have a smell!
There are many natural essential oils that you can purchase and add to things to give them the desired smell you want, that are much safer for you than the many fragrances. I can not walk down the aisle in the grocery store that has candles, fabric softener and detergent. I get a migraine instantly. I trust that that this is a STRONG indication of the unhealthy nature of these smells.

I myself do not use traditional laundry detergent, having children with sensitive skin. Here is a brand that I do like which is a much greener choice! Nature Clean - solutions for a toxic-free home. There are many other popular brands as well, Seventh Generation, Earth Friendly Products and Method.

Why use windex, when you can achieve better results with vinegar and water? While you are at it, recycle the Thursday newspapers, they work wonders, sometimes better than paper towel for wipping the mirrors/windows. Out of a scouring agent - use baking soda. Cleaning the counters after cooking - again use your vinegar and water.

There are many greener choices when it comes to hygiene products. Green Beaver is a great Canadian company. I love to support local, and Canadian companies which is why I like Green Beaver and Nature Clean. in additional to clean NC also has hygiene products like castile soap, in pump or bar, they have shampoo and conditioner.

Need a great facial moisturizer, I use aloe, straight from the plant. I buy the large organic aloe leaf and store it in the fridge. Every morning, I cut a small piece off, cut it in half and after I wash my face with yes - water and then pat it with a little bit of 100% which hazel, I take my aloe and wipe my face. So simple and it did not cost me an arm and a leg. Keep it simple.

People do not realize how much money they could save by not buying all these harmful - unneeded products. Once you become a chemical free house hold, you will FEEL the difference. It's like eating healthy - you will FEEL the difference.

Stay tuned. We had a great weekend of vegan and raw food! More to come.

I waited this long to post in the New Year on purpose. I find around 6-8 weeks into the New Year is when everyone's New Year's resolution either is going strong or fading fast.

I have heard about so many resolutions and short term diets, I have one response: Make a lifestyle change, slowly and a realistic one that you can implement over time. Make a lifestyle change for a better future.

Start by doing your homework. Read, read, read. Watch some great documentaries. When I started blogging, I listed many great resources. I will now list them again. Some of my favourite documentaries, I watch time and time again. The information never gets old.

Documentary Must Sees:

Food Matters
Forks over Knives
The Gerson Miracle
Simply Raw
Food Inc.

We have the choice every morning when we wake up to grab something healthy to eat. Vegetables, fruit. I know for me it has been a fairly easy transition as I have severe digestive issues which allowed me for the better to cut a large amount of foods out of my diet and replace them with the many, many healthier alternatives that exist.

Think fresh...Non-processed, no preservatives, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours....The list goes on and on.

Start simple. The first meal of the day - breakfast. This I found was the easiest meal to change your eating habits. I start my day off with a smoothie. I have many many variations. The possibilities are endless. Lately, I have been enjoying the following:

1 organic apple
1 organic pear
1 organic kiwi
1 handful organic spinach
1 organic banana

I place all the above contents in my nutra-bullet and fill with filtered water to the max line and blend away. It is so good. I have actually started bringing it to work to share! I rarely have time to sit down and eat at home, this is my breakfast on the go. I probably eat 5-6 times a day. Small meals.

Another easy meal to make healthy is lunch. Start simple with salad, there are so many healthy recipes out there. Keep it simple. I have many good raw and vegetarian cook books that are over the top, when starting out keep it simple or you will overwhelm yourself.

Simple Salad:
Organic Spring Garden Mix
Cucumber
Tomatoes
Dates

Lastly snacks: Keep in Raw. Vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit:

Keep it simple. There are many ways that you can make a lifestyle change. Many people start out cutting the amount of meat they eat down. Then they change the type of meat they eat. Then they add more vegetarian dishes into their diet, then they try to make sure that 50% of every meal is raw. Transition slowly. Snack on raw fruits and vegetables. Juicing is an easy way to get a huge amount of vegetables into your system in a day. Over time your tastes will change and your appreciation of fresh none processed food will be unleashed.

Don't simply make a short term resolution, make a long term lifestyle change!

Tell me about it. It's good to be back!!
I mean, it is December 12th...Where has the year gone. Life is going by way to fast for me. I mentioned sometime ago that I made raw squash soup. Well only now and I getting to actually blogging about it.

You do not need to dehydrate your squash, I just wanted to try it out. Wash and cut up squash. Place in dehydrator on 315 5-6 hours. At the same time be soaking 500g of raw cashews in water. Once you are finished soaking and dehydrating add ingrediants to food processor.
I am bound and bend on zapping this before it turns into anything. I must admit I am feeling a lot better today. When I start to feel sick, straight away I up my intake of vegetables/fruits. Juicing and eating raw, raw, raw!
This morning I juiced: 4 Carrots, big hunk of Ginger, 2 handfuls of Kale, 3 Apples.
Just can't get enough. I am so busy at work, that I have little time to prepare and home is busy busy as well, so this is my five minute salad at work today.

Spinach, avocado, radish, tomato, green onion.

I also thought it was important to share some great sources of calcium. When most people think of calcium they think cows milk. I do not drink cows milk. There are many more sources of calcium out there-so get eating! There are many but, here a few of my favourites:

1) Kale
2) Broccoli
3) Parsley
4) Kelp
5) Almonds
6) Brazil nuts
7) Celery
8) Hemp Milk
9) Dates

So, I just wrote on my facebook wall "It's only 12:26PM and I have already comsumed the following."

I made some fresh juice this morning for my husbannd and I. It contained 1/2 cucumber, 1 apple, 1 sweet potato, 5 carrots, handful of parsley, 7 med/large kale leaves! I did not take a photograph because, well it tasted a lot better than it looked. It was not all that pleasing ot the eye, it was rather a shade of brown, but it was very pleasing to my tummy!

Snack at work: Kale Chips & Green Tea
It has been a while since I have written for sure. With work, 2 children in school, 1 not in school, life can get a big crazy. I am trying first and foremost to make my children/husband my top priority and to spend quality time with them. I have cut back on blogging and other activities that were competing or conflicting with our time as a family.

However, I have been juicing and make lots of fall soups. I love squash soup and it is so good for you. I have made a raw fall soup and I will be blogging about it very soon. I also love pumpkin - it is so yummy to eat. I would much rather eat it, than carve it for decoration.

In the fall when the weather gets cooler/cold - I do add cooked foods into my diet. I still do not eat any dairy or soy, no wheat or gluten, no eggs, and no meat. (I did get sucked into trying some 100% grass fed, organic, hormone and antibiotic free calves liver and I have to tell you it was good and it did not bother my stomach which is a first.)

Here is some yummy juice I made the other day! Full of energy and power!
This is a great time to get mason jars at the store. Very inexpensive and they are great for dry storage and work equally as great juice. I make in the morning and carry with me to work.Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04420009152274531283noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8047164343939397382.post-16041399688439893292012-09-06T16:07:00.002-07:002012-09-06T16:07:46.972-07:00Melon Madness!I started my morning off this morning with a simple watermelon drink. Things have been a little crazy with the back to school, end of summer, new work hours schedule.

I put 1/4 of a watermelon in the blender with 1 cup of water and blended it. What a cool and refreshing drink on a hot day. Some people add other berries, or a squeeze of lemon, I had minimal time on my way out this morning, so I made it as simple as I could. Yummy!
I love to juice beets, I love to shred beets for salad...I like cooked beets. I just like beets.
So when I was up north - I went to visit my Auntie Jan. She has a wonderful garden that I had the opportunity to raid. Well, this is the first time, I have ever seen beets that look like this, but none the less, I love beets and they are wonderful.
Beets are a wonderful addition to any diet. Many people prepare and enjoy them different ways, I think my favourite would be juiced. They are full of vitamin C, manganese, potassium and fiber.

Summer has been so much fun to date and we have been doing as much as possible. I just returned home from a week of holidays up north (6.5hrs north of where I live.) I spent the week with the three children at my parents, visiting family and friends. Near the end of my trip I spent a morning blueberry picking with my Dad - so much fun. There were not nearly as many berries due to the high temperatures but, we did managed to find some.
Blueberries are a wonderful treat. You can snack on them alone, eat them with some almond milk, add them to smoothies...

Here are some great facts on blueberries from http://www.livestrong.com/

"Eating fresh berries provides fiber, water content, and more vitamin C and potassium than preserved berries."

"Blueberries contain significant amounts of anthocyanadins, antioxidant compounds that produce blues, purples and reds in fruits and vegetables. Blueberries contain ellagic acid, another phytochemical that protects cells from damage. Blueberries are a good source of vitamin C, E, manganese and fiber."
